The College was founded on the 14th of November, 1973 with a total student population of 80 and 10 tutorial staff. The pioneer class was form one, which was later followed by a lower six class in 1975. At inception, the college started with a few buildings some of which were inherited from Government College, Owerri. The inherited buildings were two laboratory blocks which house the Biology, Home Economics, Physics and Chemistry laboratories and four staff quarters, one of which was used as the administrative block.
It is important to mention that the outstanding milestone the College has been witnessing has not been without the contributions and efforts that individuals, groups, corporate bodies and government have always rendered to her. In this regard the supports of our host community, Old Girls, PTA, members of staff, the Imo State Government and the Federal Ministry of Education are quite appreciated. It should be put on record that your continued dedication and unflinching support to the college have helped to give her one good History: " Success " . Over the years, the success of the college has been made manifest in the crop of successful and well-meaning individuals she has been producing.
FGGC OWERRI COLLEGE SONG
The guns of battle were all silent
The smoke of destruction blown away
The lips of war were sealed
And the scaring almost healed
When our school was born to herald a new day
Nigeria we all make thee a promise
To serve thee with strength of hand and brain
To build and not break down
Bury quarrels in the ground
So that those who died may not have gone in vain
We come from the ends of this great country,
To join hands and learn the arts of peace,
Our voices may be small but united in our call,
Long live Nigeria North, South, West and East.
Nigeria we all make thee a promise,
To serve thee with strength of hand and breath,
To build and not break down, bury quarrels in the ground,
So that those who died may not have gone in vain.
